The PC Medic - Hide yo kids Hide yo Wifi

I was recently at dinner with some friends discussing online security. They asked me how easy it was to hack someones WiFi and use it to do all sorts of nasty things. I pulled out my phone, connected to the restaurants free WiFi, and managed to open up their Modem settings with a web browser. The thing is that even if your wireless broadcast is password protected, your modem is not.

Let me show you how unprotected you may be...

1. Open up a new tab in your browser. In the address bar type "192.169.0.1" This is the most common router IP address, If this doesn't work, you can try "10.0.0.1"

Your modem will prompt you to enter a user name and password... If you haven't changed it, it will be "admin" for the user name and "password" for the password... this is what you need to change to secure your Internet.

As you can probably see, your login details, password and IP address are visible and not asterisked out like usual.

This is a huge security risk but thankfully you will also notice options on your left in the toolbar. I can't tell you where exactly as every modem is different but you need to find the "Modem options" to change your device login.

Make sure you write it down somewhere or don't forget it, but once this change is complete, you will have added extra protection against someone compromising your connection.

-Sarge out!
