The Future Of Gaming

Great scott gamers! There's only ten days to go until Sony are rumoured to unveil the next Playstation codenamed "Orbis." Now gamers are wondering what's it all about. Does it have 1.2 "Jiggawatts?" A cup holder? Will it make me a sammich? Which brings up a fantastic discussion point... Where is the future of gaming going?

Well if the rumours are to be believed, neither the new Xbox or PS4 will play second hand games, locking your purchases to the console. Also the new Xbox is said to require an always on internet connection. These rumours concern me... Do you guys remember a handheld console called the PSP Go? I didn't think so, and I'm sure Sony would like to be able to forget it too. Essentially it was a PSP without the disc drive that you would only be able download games from one source (Playstation Network) at their prices. So why did this console fail? Well Sony believed that the future of gaming is in online only sales and maybe it is... just not yet. Removing the ability to hire games or buy them pre-owned will hurt these consoles immensly, and with both companies focused on digital distribution, the lack of pricing competition will only hurt us gamers.

Nintendo has made the first step into the next gen with their Wii U system, which can play pre-owned games, has free online services and doesn't require an internet connection. Now I realise that the Wii U being classed as a Next Gen console is a loose term since it is comparable to the PS3 or Xbox 360's power, but Nintendo have innovated controls by mimicking their popular DS console controls.  This is what gamers want. We crave innovation and new ways to play games. Graphics are great and all but what we really want is something different.

So talking point, head over to our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SOGwhatsitlike) and comment on the picture above. Tell us here at What's it Like whether you buy pre-owned games, play online, or what you would like to see in the next generation of gaming.

It's time for me to go back... Back to gaming!
