Top 10 Retro Games

There's no school like the old school...

Due to popular demand* we are writing about our top ten retro games. Now, before you get out the flame cannons I would like to say this is my personal top ten since there's no way I could play every single game in existence (believe me I've tried!) Now here at What's it Like we would love to hear your views on what your personal top ten retro games are on our Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SOGwhatsitlike) So have a read then head on over to our page and leave a comment!

*Popular demand means 1 person.

10. Wolfenstien (Various Formats)

Ah Wolfenstien! Don't confuse the name for a German dog simulator, this is the grandaddy of all shooters. Running around a german castle shooting Nazis and treasure hunting was awesome. When I first played this game I had to upgrade my computer from an XT to a 286! Talk about power! This game has spawned multiple sequels and spinoff series and paved the way for a little known game called "Doom."

9. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Mega Drive)

Sonic has had a bit of a rough time lately in gaming. He has starred in several sub par games since his foray into 3D up until the fantastic Sonic Colours. Back in the day however, he was running (No pun intended) with the best of them. The game feature awesome 16 bit graphics and addictive gameplay and in it's hayday, would give Mario a run for his money! (Ok I'll stop now...)

8. Double Dragon II (Multiformat)

Nothing says fun like punching and kicking your way through a horde of retro neon gansters! Cyclone kicks were amazing and a level with a fight in a helicopter was amazing in its day. Just watch out for Bobo and the love twist more dramatic than an episode of "Days of our lives."

7. Super Mario 3 (NES)

For its time this game had the best graphics on the NES. Classic Mario gameplay (which wasn't classic at the time) kept players entertained for hours on end. A special mention goes to the airship battle levels with its awesome MIDI battle music and Bullet Bills a plenty!

6. Duke Nukem 3D (Multiformat)

Hail to the king baby! Many of you have probably played Duke Nukem Forever and many of you probably realised it was about as fun as staring into the sun until permanent retina damage kicks in, but DN3D was an excellent first person shooter. It used crass humour, dry wit and more explosions than a Michael Bay film to keep me playing for hours on end. Hail to the King baby! (Well, not anymore...)

5. Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

When first pitched to executives, they scoffed at the idea where you spend time running away from enemies rather than killing them. MGS proved however, that using your brains and a less liberal application of murder make a fantastic game. While it has had games in the series before this one, MGS on Playstation cemented the franchise into the smash hit it is today. (!)

4. Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)

Flame shields up! We all know that FF7 is more popular so why is 8 on the list and 7 is not? Let me explain... FF8 had so many features. Improved graphics, gameplay and combat elements. I loved the idea of junctioning magic to attacks and the story of Squall and Rinoa? Who didn't have a tear in their eye in the space scene? Don't get me wrong FF7 is a great games as with most games in the FF series, but FF8 had something that makes me play it through every couple of years.

3. Goldeneye (N64)

Probably the sole reason the Nintendo 64 was so popular at launch. Goldeneye had fantastic levels, excellent graphics and the multi-player was the first of its kind (picking Oddjob is still cheating!) Nothing compared to 4 friends split screen with remote mines in facility (tell me on Facebook if you had a better MP setup.) Even the way of unlocking cheats was well thought out, running through levels in certain times to unlock the codes! Superb Rareware gold.

2. Battletoads (NES)

Another quality Rareware title. Battletoads had similar gameplay to Double Dragon except it added vehicles and pigs with axes. Who can forget the descent down the tunnel in level 2? Or the frantic hoverbike chase in level 3? Great humour and addictive gameplay meant smashing your enemies with a giant boot never got old!

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

Were you expecting anything else? Honestly... This game is number one on everyones top games list and for good reason. Zelda 64 had excellent graphics, a gripping story and pure Nintendo goodness. Who can forget fishing at Lake Hylia or fighting your shadow in the Ice Temple? Nothing compares to watching the sun go down over Hyrule field as you ride to your next destination. It's sequels have been great but nothing compares to the definitive version on N64. Best... Game... Ever!

So that's all from me. Remember to share your top ten on our Facebook page and stay tuned for more top ten lists... What would you like to see?

For now, I'm going to play my Ocarina and travel back to the land of Hyrule.
