Review: Game Dev Story (iDevice, Android)

What starts as something to pass the time waiting for the train ends up being a game that takes up a lot of your time as you strive to ship as many units of your latest release as you can. Game Dev Story is one of the many great titles from mobile developer Kairosoft and if you are looking for a distraction from the AAA titles, then look no further.

The idea is simple, you own a game development studio consisting of a few staff who must either develop or work on outsourced material to make money. You can start a franchise and if its successful, can make several sequels to keep the big bucks rolling in. You choose a genre and game type and away your developers go, typing away at their desks. You can attend "Gamedex" expos to show off the game and win cash rewards for doing well. Your games are also reviewed by critics which can impact sales immensely so try to iron those bugs out!

The gameplay stays on one screen, allowing you to watch your employees tick of development milestones. You can let them take a risk to boost gameplay or graphics or it could backfire and create several bugs, forcing the delay of the game. As you progress, you can move to bigger studios and hire more staff allowing you to create huge games. You only have around 20 years of in game time to maximize your profits after that, your score stops accumulating. What's great is that as years pass, new consoles are added for you to develop on. They are loosely based off real life consoles and its funny trying to guess which ones are the real life counterparts.

The graphics are cartoon based sprites and have their own charm and level of character to them. Sounds are very basic and most of the time I found myself playing with the volume off to stop the repetitive music. Aside from a few sound issues, Game Dev is a blast to play and this reviewer has no hesitation in endorsing its purchase.

So What's it Like?

Like The Sims mixed with Football Manager.

I give it 7/10
