User Beware - Online Scams!

This is a friendly What's it Like community service message in regards to scams. Currently, there are 2 major scams targeted at Australians and a few of our readers have been hit.

The first scam is an email from Westpac asking for your details because someone has tried to access your account. If this was really the case, the Bank would contact you directly via phone of SMS service. If in doubt, call your bank. It is much better to be on hold for 20 minutes then to have your account cleaned out.

The second is a scam Email from the Australian Tax office offering instant refund if you fill out a survey. Apart from the fact I'm certain the ATO doesn't care about us, I'm sure they wouldn't need all your details. This scam allows people to access not only your bank accounts but your passport and residential details as well.

There are many scams out there and they can be very cleverly disguised whether it be a Facebook 1 million likes scam, or a personalized email. Sometimes you find out it's a scam after it's too late.

The best advice this nerd can give you is get yourself a good virus scanner, a good spyware scanner and a good malware scanner. For your convenience, I have included links for all 3 to their official sites below.

If you are unsure of anything feel free to contact me through this site. Advice is free and could save you a lot of heartache and money in the long run.
